BABBITTING MANUAL

If a thermometer is used, 700°F. is sufficient for large bearings when using Tin-base metal. As much as 800°F. maybe necessary for small bearings. Lead-base Babbitt metals require approximately 100°F. more heat than Tin- base metal. Because of the variance in size of bearings, some deviation from the above recommended temperatures is necessary.

The paper idea expressed by Lonnie sounds like a good substitute, even if the paper turns to carbon as the babbit is poured.

Babbitt bearings- oil them or grease them?

Dec 1, 2014. #3. Either one will work. In dusty conditions, oil seems to be better, as fresh oil tends to wash off dirt and deposits, where grease tends to collect these detrimental items. in clean conditions, grease tends to be better for its ability to 'stick' to the bearing surfaces. Grease in engine bearings is not static - it will 'roll ...

Babbit bearing and shim question | Smokstak® Antique Engine Community

Pine or other soft woods. You don't have to worry about the shim touching the crank. You don't have to get the thickness perfect, because you can compress the wood slightly. Wood will hold oil next to the crank. The wood would support the bearing cap. You just have to be careful not to over tighten and loose clearance.

Babbit for crank bearings and its use today

We use Babbit for propeller shaft bearings and do approx 6 a year. We add nickel to increase the wear. The amount depends on how much the owner wants to spend. The shafts are heavy but slow turning <1000 rpm. The bigger the shaft the slower it goes. A lot of engines run around 2000 rpm and 4.5 is a pretty common reduction.
