The lathe was a better value than the mill, IMHO. That 8x12 is NOT the same as the Mini-Lathe, which is another option. This one is bigger and heavier than the "Mini-lathe" version. It is also better built in general by all reports, and comparing it to the mini-mill, it sure seems that way to me as well.

Jun 25, 2021. #8. The lathe and mill must be considered a kit as they come from HF. They can be made into very usable machines. A lot of those little square column mills have been converted to CNC with good results. But, the work size envelope is extremely limited on both.

Since you say it's a mill/lathe combo, I would assume that the spindle taper refers to the lathe spindle. #3 Morse is very likely the taper if you were installing a center for turning between centers. It sucks if the mill spindle is #2 Morse taper. That's fine for a drill press, but really limits your options on a milling head.
